Capsule collections seem like a good idea in theory, but harder to execute in reality. (For the uninitiated, a capsule collection is an edited lineup of clothing that you can mix and match to create a much larger number of different outfits.) When applied to your makeup routine, though, it can make life surprisingly easy.

A makeup capsule collection is a short lineup of the essentials needed to do your makeup, whether you’re looking for a fresh, effortless look or turning it up for a big event, like a wedding. (It can also help declutter your makeup drawer, if you’re getting a headstart on spring cleaning.) It can streamline your morning by helping you understand what’s most important to you and how to use it properly.

Makeup artist Misty Spinney walks us through the components of your makeup capsule collection, and why each is so important.

Start with Skincare

Think of your skin as the foundation of a house. You can put up all the great wallpaper and bring in all the gorgeous furniture, but if your foundation doesn’t get the proper care, then nothing else will really matter. And the same goes for your skin in the context of a makeup routine — if your skin is healthy and happy, then the rest of your makeup will be that much better, not to mention easier.

“Your skin is the largest organ in your body, so take care of it before applying any products,” says Spinney. “This way your products amplify and enhance rather than conceal or feel a need to hide.” Not sure where to start? We’ve got you covered — check out our guide to building a simple (yet effective) skincare routine.

Find Your Foundation

Once you’ve prepped your skin for your makeup application, turn to foundation. This step can even out skin tone, blur blemishes and dark spots, and smooth out texture in order to create a base for the rest of your makeup. However, not all foundations are created equal. “Take the 3-minute NakedPoppy assessment to find your best recommended product,” says Spinney.

While the exact formula can vary according to your genetic skin type, some work for most. “I am a major fan of the Kosas Tinted Face Oil,” Spinney says. “It goes on light and blends to look like a second skin.” Best of all, its coverage is customizable depending on how much you apply, so a drop can offer a no-makeup makeup look while adding more offers additional coverage.

Add Bronzer

“Bronzer is like a suntan in your pocket,” says Spinney. (Plus, it comes without the typical risks of a tan.) You can choose between cream, like RMS Beauty Buriti Bronzer,  and powder bronzer, like Vapour Bronzing Powder, depending on your needs (don’t worry, though — the NakedPoppy assessment will automatically match you with the type best suited to you).

Whichever formula you choose to go with, bronzer is still worth adding to your capsule collection. “It adds depth, life, and warmth to your skin after you have applied your foundation to even out and refine,” she says. “It also doubles as a neutral eyeshadow.” If you’re new to it, here’s how to use it to get the best possible (and most natural-looking) result.

Consider Multi-purpose Color

Multi-purpose color — in other words, a single product that works as lip, cheek, or eyeshadow color — can anchor a capsule collection. “These products save money, time, and the need to figure out your approach,” says Spinney. It’s an easy way to add a colorful yet realistic hue to the skin, making your complexion look revitalized and healthy. As with bronzer, you can choose from a number of different textures, such as Ere Perez Carrot Colour Pot and Rituel de Fille Inner Glow Crème Pigment.

Not only that, but you can turn it into a whole look depending on what you’re going for. “You can keep it simple by dabbing a flush hue to the apples of your cheeks or simply bring a full spectrum brightness by also hitting your eyelids, lips, and bringing the blush up towards your temples,” she adds.

Incorporate Highlighter

Spinney considers highlighter her daily must-have, whether or not she wears anything else from her makeup capsule collection. “I apply it to my upper cheekbones, bridge of my nose, browbones, and inside corners of my eyes — instant radiance,” she says.

RMS Beauty’s Living Luminizer is a one-shade-suits-all formula that adds a gleam without looking shiny. “Paired with the other steps, you will have a fully transformed base that can take you into the office or out for a magical date night,” she adds.

Eyeliner

“Go for a neutral color for your skin tone,” says Spinney. (Not surprisingly, we’re big fans of NakedPoppy Clean Liquid Eyeliner, which doesn’t budge once it sets.) “You can apply a light line for a subtle enhancement or take it bigger for a more dramatic effect.”

Don’t miss our three ways to wear eyeliner for a festive look.

Finish with Mascara

A forever essential, mascara adds just the right amount of definition to the eyes. “It’s the icing on the cake when used with the other steps,” says Spinney. “Sometimes this is all someone needs to feel like they’re stepping into their day.” Try Fitglow Beauty Vegan Good Lash+ Mascara if you’re looking for something with staying power, or Lily Lolo Big Lash Mascara to amp up the volume.

Extra Credit: Makeup Brushes

Your makeup capsule collection is yours, after all, so depending on your preferences, time, and the look you like, you can add or swap other items in.

For starters, Spinney recommends makeup brushes. “They can blend your makeup for a professional finish and help your products last longer,” she says. (Scope out the five essential brushes here.) You can also add concealer, brows, and lipstick, too.

Another way to look at it? The world is your oyster, and a good makeup capsule collection is just a straightforward way of organizing it — and making your day that much easier in the process.
