Foundation. The product we use to achieve an even complexion, and to create an appearance of radiant, balanced skin. For most, applying foundation is one of the first steps we take during our normal makeup routine. But for some, wearing foundation can feel heavy, greasy, or unnatural.

Luckily, as technology has advanced, so have the options for foundation. Gone are the days of the one-size-fits-all cakey base. Today, with all the options of foundation available, it’s much easier to master a flawless, natural appearance for your skin. However, with all the options, the choices can also feel overwhelming.

NakedPoppy’s algorithm is here to take away the frustrating (and expensive) guesswork – matching you with the right foundation for your skin type, coloring, and preferences.

Still interested in learning the differences between certain foundations? This article will outline the four factors to consider: skin type, finish, coverage, and texture. Here’s a quick guide to help you navigate.

Factor 1: Skin Type

Generally speaking, our skin types fall into four main categories: oily, dry, combination, or normal. For many of us, our skin, like our bodies, can fluctuate with time or changes in environment, so it’s normal if you feel like you fall into a couple of categories.

Oily: You tend to have more visible pores and notice shine on your forehead and nose throughout the day.

Combination: Quite common, combination skin is categorized by having some dry patches and some oily areas.

Dry: Skin may feel more rough and sensitive. Often dry skin comes along with redness or flaking.

Normal: Your skin is balanced and hydrated, with little variations of tone or texture throughout the face. Normal skin is mostly associated with younger skin.

Factor 2: Finish

How do you want your skin to look after you’ve applied your foundation? Finish has everything to do with texture and in general there are three options.

Dewy: This finish gives the skin a radiant glow that reflects light, giving it an almost moist look.

Matte: Free of the appearance of moisture, matte give the skin an even, velvety effect.

Satin: A happy medium between dewy and matte, satin finishes are a bit more dimensional than a full on matte foundation, without the sheen of what would be considered dewy.

Factor 3: Coverage

Sheer: A very light layer that typically doesn’t cover freckles or hyper pigmentation, but can help control shine, or create a smoother, more even appearance.

Medium: Helps to blend unevenness in tone or texture without looking heavy. Great for every day.

Full: Ideal for those who like a full coverage foundation, prefer a more polished look, or are trying to camouflage more severe skin conditions. Full coverage is also great for special occasions or when you’re having photos taken.

Factor 4: Texture

Powder: Powders tend to have light-to-medium coverage and are generally recommended for those with combination or oily skin who want a matte finish. Powder foundation can be worn by itself, or serve as a finishing layer to help set the makeup. While some powder foundations are buildable, the more powder you use, the more it can settle into fine lines giving a cakey appearance. To apply, it’s best to use a sponge or fluffy face brush to buff gently into the skin.

Stick: In the clean beauty world, stick foundations seem to leave the most dewy finish, and are good for dry or combination skin. The formula is a creamy solid that is applied straight to the face. Stick foundation is also great for spot treating, or applying to specific parts of the face, rather than all over. Simply swipe the stick directly on the face and blend using your fingers or a flat foundation brush.

Liquid: The most versatile of the three, liquid foundation can range anywhere from light to full coverage depending on how much product you use. Liquid foundations are buildable and can set matte or stay dewy, depending on the formula. There are many ways to apply: using your fingers, a makeup sponge, a flat foundation brush, or a fluffy face brush are all great options.
