Liquid eyeliner is notorious for being unforgiving and fussy — undeservedly so, in our experience. Sure, while the cat-eye *does* benefit from a steady hand, anyone can do a classic everyday eyeliner look. That versatility makes it the perfect tool for creating a festive eye look for parties and celebrations. Paired with a subtle (but still visible) shimmer, it’s especially joyful. Alone and stretched into a wing, it gives instant polish. And for everyday, it can even help you revive tired eyes.

But not just any eyeliner will do. Since eyeliner is placed so close to the eye, a clean formula ensures peak safety. “The eye area is delicate and should be treated with care,” says NakedPoppy makeup artist Tricia Turner. Try NakedPoppy Clean Liquid Eyeliner, our award-winning liquid eyeliner that creates a smooth, precise line but is safe for even the most sensitive eyes.

If you’re a liquid liner newbie, a few pointers can help make it a breeze. First, “get as close to the mirror as you possibly can,” Turner says. A magnifying mirror is even better; this way, you’ll be able to see exactly what you’re doing. She also advises clients to take their time. (Translation: Try doing a test-drive when you have ample time to spare, rather than when you’re running behind for a virtual happy hour.)

If you mess up, no sweat: There’s nothing makeup remover can’t fix. “If you wobble or it’s not quite straight, any mistakes can be corrected with a thin cotton swab and makeup remover, such as the Ere Perez Ginkgo Micellar Water,” says Turner. With that in mind, take these three looks out for a test-drive for your next event.

A Simple Line Paired With a Bold Lip

Make the occasion feel as special as it is by pairing a simple eyeliner look with a festive lip color. (Turner is a fan of RMS Beauty Wild With Desire Lipstick.) “Follow the natural shape of your lash line with the liquid liner applicator and build until you reach the desired thickness,” she says.

  1. First, draw a line starting at the center of your eye at the upper lash line towards the outside corner of your eye.
  2. Without re-dipping the applicator, start at the inner corner of the same eye and draw a line to meet at the center of your lash line.
  3. Repeat on your other eye.
  4. Repeat Steps 1 through 3 until your lines are as thick as you want.
  5. Swipe on a bold lipstick, and you’re set!

Liner Plus A Little Shimmer

Take your look to the next level by pairing your liner with a light-catching shadow. “Adding sparkle or shimmer instantly says ‘holiday’,” says Turner. We love Alima Pure Pressed Eyeshadow in Luxe, a coppery shadow that adds a sophisticated glimmer without looking over-the-top.

  1. First, blend a bit of shimmer eyeshadow onto the center of the lid using a brush.
  2. Apply liquid liner close to the lash line to add subtle definition, using the technique above. Let your liner dry before moving onto Step 3.
  3. Curl your lashes and sweep on a volumizing mascara to complete the look. (Turner is a fan of the Lily Lolo Vegan Mascara, as “it defines and volumizes for maximum impact,” she says.”)

The Classic Wing

A classic winged eyeliner adds an instant oomph — much like a great lipstick. Here’s a simple way to make it happen.

  1. First, look in a mirror and visualize an imaginary line that reaches from the outermost corner of your eye to the end of your brow bone.
  2. (Optional!) Mark the angle of the imaginary line by making a tiny notch at the corner of your eye with your eyeliner.
  3. Apply your eyeliner along the upper lash line. When you reach the outer corner of your eye, follow the same angle along that imaginary line.

No matter which look you go with, don’t be afraid to try something dramatic and out of your comfort zone — that’s part of the festivity. “Be patient with yourself,” says Turner. The final look is worth the effort, and so are you!
